We recently joined the International Dutch Oven Society (IDOS), and received our first copy of Dutch Oven News (DOn), the club newsletter. Many club newsletters are low-quality photocopy productions. Not Dutch Oven News. It’s a twenty-two page full-page magazine on glossy paper with a full-colour cover. It looked so nice that when it came in the mail, I almost mistook it for junk mail and threw it out.
The mottos of IDOS is “Good Friends, Good Food, Good Fun”. The DOnnewsletter is divided into three sections that reflect the three concepts.
The “Good Food” section of DOn impressed me quite a bit. It’s full of recipes. Some recipes are easy, some are more involved. It provided inspiration for dinner to night, and will keep us experimenting through the winter.
One article in the “Good Fun” section caught my eye. “The Dutch Oven as a Survival Tool” made me reflect on the reason why we bought our first set of outdoor ironware. We set a one-year goal to get our house in order from a preparedness standpoint, which I think I’ll write about in more detail.
At any rate, being able to rub shoulders with the IDOS members and learn from their generous hearts has been worth the fee.
