I do not use it personally because I have some unusual needs, and on two points OpenOffice has rough edges that cut into my productivity. Others find it perfectly usable. NeoOffice is primarily the private effort of a <a href="http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/faq.php" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">two-man team</a>. Their model is explained in part <a href="https://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/earlyaccess.php" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">here</a>.
