Install wget on OS X

These notes assume Xcode and the command-line tools are installed.

Get the current wget from the GNU FTP site. As of the date of this article, wget 1.14 is current. (Update: As Alex notes in the comments, 1.15 is available.)

Building is the typical GNU build sequence, but use the –with-ssl=openssl option with configure.

curl -O
tar xvzf wget-1.15.tar.gz
cd wget-1.15
./configure --with-ssl=openssl
sudo make install

And it’s done.

Thanks for this great little nugget, didn’t really want to do the whole Brew thing. I checked the GNU FTP site and a newer version – wget 1.15 is available. I have modified the instructions for the new version should anyone like to use them.

    1 curl -O
    2 tar xvzf wget-1.15.tar.gz
    3 cd wget-1.15
    4 ./configure –with-ssl=openssl
    5 make
    6 sudo make install

  2. Alex,

Thank you for the update. I updated the article to reflect your comments.
