Installing NodeJS on Linux from Tarballs

The NodeJS site has a variety of tarballs to choose from, but there is no immediate documentation for a recommended install procedure. The following worked for me.

cd /tmp
wget https://nodejs.org/dist/v8.0.0/node-v8.0.0-linux-x64.tar.xz
tar -xf node-v8.0.0-linux-x64.tar.xz --directory /usr/local --strip-components 1
